I've been here 12 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in The Heights. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in real estate. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like sushi.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

2. Summers can be brutally hot

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are reasonable, gas is improving.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
