Hey folks, Poverty rate is 13.4%, which is around average. Median household income is $56,729, which feels about average for the area. Crime rate is something to consider -Morgan City sits at 324.5 per 100K. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Looking forward to hearing from you all. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Raleigh it's improving.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a project manager, 34, moved here 12 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Pine Hills and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The dating scene situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for families. challenging vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Bought a house here in 2016 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Riverside. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in retail. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Austin about 1 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good internet infrastructure
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Urban sprawl is real
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are manageable, gas is challenging.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.
