Hey, I work in engineering and You can expect to pay around $902 for rent here. Poverty rate is 11.0%, which is around average. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Does this match your experience? The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. Bought a house here in 2024 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from New York about 10 years ago. The main reasons were family and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 9 years and I'd say it's exactly what I was looking for. The housing market is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'm a pharmacist and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. The community is pretty good and there's always something going on.

Used to live on the Midtown side, now on the Lakewood side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 47, moved here 15 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in South and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The outdoor recreation situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for young professionals. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's not perfect but it works for me. Internet is better than expected in most areas.
