Longtime lurker here, I grew up here but left for a while. Household incomes average around $76,250 in Moscow. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What do you all think? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Portland about 14 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Affordable housing options
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Definitely worth checking out..

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

I've been living here for 10 years and I'd say I'm still on the fence after all this time. The housing market is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely challenging and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Springfield) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Uptown. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in retail. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Definitely worth checking out..

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Bought a house here in 2021 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone up significantly since then.
