First post here. I'm originally from Albuquerque and Homes are going for about $269,900 on average. You can expect to pay around $1,045 for rent here. The median home value here is around $269,900, which seems about average. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely tough and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Highland) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Used to live on the Westside side, now on the North side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.
