Life in Mount Prospect as a young professional

I'm a college student here and Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. Anyone in a similar situation? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

I'm a HR manager and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. The community is pretty good and there's always something going on.

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is cultural scene. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely underrated and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Old Town) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Riverside for 8 years. Moved from Salt Lake City for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is solid - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Riverside schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Urban sprawl is real. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 9/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in West for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good healthcare facilities
- The dating scene scene is improving

The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Chain restaurants dominate

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for singles. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 1 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want public transit, then yeah this place is great. But if traffic matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in legal. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been in Midtown for 1 years. Moved from Tampa for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
finance is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Midtown schools are excellent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Traffic during rush hour is rough. Not very walkable outside downtown. And school system can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 6/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in tech. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..
