Housing in Mount Vernon compared to Cincinnati

My family moved here when I was a kid. Crime rate is something to consider -Mount Vernon sits at 1,445.8 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $893 for rent here. Homes are going for about $89,700 on average. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Good job market
- Strong sense of community
- Walkable downtown
- Active local events

Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Not very walkable
- Poor road conditions
- Homelessness issues downtown
Does this match your experience? Cheers. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Miami about 13 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are reasonable, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. No regrets on my end..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Westside for 10 years. Moved from Boston for my partner's job. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is pretty good. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
consulting is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is tough - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Westside schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Road conditions need improvement. Far from beaches/mountains. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 7/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've been living here for 5 years and I'd say I have mixed feelings honestly. The public transit is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

I work in consulting here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is pretty good. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, the quality of life is solid. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Bought a house here in 2016 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone down slightly since then.
