Mount Vernon quality of life -am I missing something?
Anyone else feel this way? Homes are going for about $89,700 on average. With a population of 14,492, Mount Vernon is a small town. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Let me know your thoughts. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

Used to live on the Eastside side, now on the West side. Completely different vibe. the quality of life is solid.

Bought a house here in 2021 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone about the same since then.

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 24, moved here 15 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in East and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The housing market situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for couples. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The pet-friendliness is honestly solid and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from Nashville about 6 years ago. The main reasons were family and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Limited entertainment options
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is tough.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Hope this helps!.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. No regrets on my end..
