How are the schools in Mount Vernon?

So, Poverty rate is 12.9%, which is around average. Rent is about $909/month for a decent place. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Any advice would be great. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The school system is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

I've lived in Springfield for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Diverse dining options
- The healthcare scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Worth doing your research before committing.
