I work in marketing here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is improving. Happy to answer more specific questions..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (West) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in retail. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Old Town. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Thai.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely decent and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
