Is Mount Vernon walkable?

Household incomes average around $73,277 in Mount Vernon. Median household income is $73,277, which feels about average for the area. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Is this normal for Mount Vernon? Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Came here for weather and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The dating scene is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great Southern places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Houston about 6 years ago. The main reasons were work and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is average.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 27, moved here 5 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Meadowbrook and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Nice parks and green spaces
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Can feel isolated
3. The healthcare situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for remote workers. excellent vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $60K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
