Longtime lurker here, My partner and I are Homes are going for about $1,927,400 on average. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Worth the trade-offs? Property taxes are high but you get good services.

I'm a teacher and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. The community is excellent and there's always something going on.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want pet-friendliness, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's been a really good experience overall.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 43, moved here 15 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Midtown and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The pet-friendliness situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for remote workers. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $100K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 9 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much developing but now it's surprisingly good.

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community vibe is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The traffic is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely improving and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Riverside) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.
