The good and bad of living in Murphy

Been meaning to ask this. The median home value here is around $177,500, which is actually reasonable. With a population of 8,566, Murphy is a small town. Median household income is $73,373, which feels about average for the area. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Pros:
- Good schools
- Easy commute
- Lots of new development

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Rising rent prices
- Lack of diversity
- Boring for young people
- Homelessness issues downtown
What neighborhoods would you suggest? TIA! Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Cedar Grove. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in tech. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like sushi.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 38, moved here 2 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in Oak Park and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Can feel isolated
3. The traffic situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for young professionals. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Sunset area are challenging. Kids love it here.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is nightlife. I genuinely enjoy living here. Worth doing your research before committing.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Oak Park for 9 years. Moved from Pittsburgh for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
government is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it was the best decision I ever made. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Property taxes are high. And community vibe can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 9/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
