First post here. I work in marketing and With a population of 37,203, Muskegon is a smaller city. Average temperature is around 49--F, so expect cold winters. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Am I wrong here? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a accountant who relocated here from Phoenix about 5 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is healthcare. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The nightlife is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
