Hey folks, I'm a remote worker and Rent is about $1,246/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I overthinking this? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I've lived in Springfield for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- The school system scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from LA about 9 years ago. The main reasons were work and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is improving.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely tough and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (North) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
