Why I chose Neoga over bigger cities

Anyone else feel this way? Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. You can expect to pay around $769 for rent here. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. What do you all think? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Came here for retirement and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The school system is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Nashville about 13 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Old Town for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- The cultural scene scene is solid

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Can feel isolated

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Used to live on the South side, now on the The Heights side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely underrated and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Sunset) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Uptown for 8 years. Moved from LA for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
retail is strong here. real estate is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Uptown schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Can feel isolated. Limited entertainment options. And school system can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 53, moved here 1 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in East and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The healthcare situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for singles. challenging vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. school system used to be much stable but now it's improving.
