Thinking about relocating to Nesconset from Raleigh

I'm single, late 20s, and Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. Crime rate is something to consider -Nesconset sits at 22.0 per 100K. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. What do you all think?

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to San Francisco it's surprisingly good.

Used to live on the Downtown side, now on the Lakewood side. Completely different vibe. I have mixed feelings honestly.

I've lived in The Heights for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- The public transit scene is challenging

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for singles. No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 57, moved here 13 years ago from New York. I've lived in Westside and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Four distinct seasons
2. Close to major attractions
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The cultural scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
