Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 6 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Springfield. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in legal. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is community vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

Came here for work and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The safety is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. food scene used to be much stable but now it's pretty good.

Background: I'm a accountant, 37, moved here 2 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Meadowbrook and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The cultural scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for retirees. tough vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $100K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**

Bought a house here in 2015 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone about the same since then.
