As a 11-year resident, here are some things about New Haven that don't make it into the guides:
1. The local music scene is really vibrant
2. The library system is phenomenal
3. The local craft beer scene is legit

Rent tip: look for places in winter. Prices drop and there's more availability.

If you can afford it, Southside is the best place to live. Period.

Check out the Maple Heights area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Northside and Maple Heights are perfectly safe.
