Raising a family in New Haven — thoughts?

With a population of 133K, New Haven is a mid-size city. Crime rate is something to consider — New Haven sits at 895.1 per 100K. Poverty rate is 18.3%, which is higher than I expected. The median home value here is around $249,000, which is actually reasonable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Pros:
- Diverse community
- Lots of new development
- Active local events
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Cold winters
- Not enough green space
The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Baltimore about 14 years ago. The main reasons were weather and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are developing, gas is average.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
