Came here for my partner's job and stayed because it's been a really good experience overall. The nightlife is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Raleigh about 13 years ago. The main reasons were weather and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Background: I'm a contractor, 31, moved here 2 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in South and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Bugs and humidity in summer
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The cultural scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for families. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $50K-$110K here.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong job market in several industries
- The school system scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Happy to answer more specific questions..
