Best kept secrets of New Hyde Park, NY

Hey everyone, I've been here for 8 years and It's a a small town city with about 10,208 people. Crime rate is something to consider -New Hyde Park sits at 26.2 per 100K. Rent is about $1,634/month for a decent place. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Lots of new development
- Strong sense of community
- Walkable downtown
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- High property taxes
- Lack of diversity
- Boring for young people
- Far from major airports
Thoughts? The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Lakewood. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in finance. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from San Diego about 14 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is pretty good.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is dating scene. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, the quality of life is solid. Definitely worth checking out..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it exceeded my expectations. Internet is better than expected in most areas.
