I've lived in North for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Close to major attractions
- The nightlife scene is decent
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cultural scene used to be much stable but now it's better than expected.

Used to live on the Highland side, now on the Cedar Grove side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from San Francisco about 6 years ago. The main reasons were work and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is tough.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Happy to answer more specific questions..

I work in marketing here and I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market for my field is pretty good. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Uptown. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in finance. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
