Relocating to New Orleans, LA — pros and cons?

Longtime lurker here, I'm a remote worker and Median household income is $55,339, which feels about average for the area. Homes are going for about $296,400 on average. The unemployment rate is 4.8%, which is about average. Poverty rate is 16.3%, which is higher than I expected. With a population of 376K, New Orleans is a mid-size city. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What would you do? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I've lived in Old Town for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The cultural scene scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for families. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 3 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into running, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..
