Moving to New Paltz -what should I know?

Hi all, My family moved here when I was a kid. Homes are going for about $397,800 on average. Rent is about $1,630/month for a decent place. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Would love some local perspective.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Portland about 11 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is pretty good.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from San Francisco about 15 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Good internet infrastructure
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are wild, gas is tough.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's been a really good experience overall. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
