Best hidden gems in Newark

OK so Been living here since 2006. Crime rate is something to consider — Newark sits at 619.0 per 100K. Average temperature is around 55°F, so the weather is moderate. The unemployment rate is 6.7%, which is concerning. Rent is about $1,330/month for a decent place. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Friendly people
- Growing food scene
- Low crime in most areas

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- High property taxes
- Far from major airports
Would love some local perspective. Thanks in advance! Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Lakewood for 15 years. Moved from Miami for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
education is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is improving - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Lakewood schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Dating scene is rough. And housing market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 8/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
