Career opportunities in Newark, NJ

Hi all, Just moved here 18 months ago and Homes are going for about $337,800 on average. You can expect to pay around $1,330 for rent here. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Am I overthinking this? Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Downtown. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in government. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 3 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 47, moved here 14 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Westside and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The cost of living situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for families. solid vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
