Living in Newark — the reality

I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Median household income is $48,416, which feels on the lower side for the area. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Does this match your experience? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
