What's it really like living in Newark?

First post here. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and With a population of 307K, Newark is a mid-size city. Rent is about $1,330/month for a decent place. It's a a mid-size city city with about 307K people. The unemployment rate is 6.7%, which is concerning. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Anyone in a similar situation? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 15 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 56, moved here 3 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Greenfield and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The safety situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for couples. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
