I've been in Eastside for 5 years. Moved from Chicago for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
consulting is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is surprisingly good - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Eastside schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Chain restaurants dominate. Can feel isolated. And weather can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**

I've lived in Highland for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The weather scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Background: I'm a writer, 56, moved here 13 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in The Heights and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The school system situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for singles. solid vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$90K here.

As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much stable but now it's better than expected.
