Hey folks, My family moved here when I was a kid. Average temperature is around 65--F, so the weather is moderate. Crime rate is something to consider -Newman sits at 135.1 per 100K. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Anyone in a similar situation? Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a contractor, 50, moved here 9 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in North and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Good schools in most areas
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The outdoor recreation situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for couples. solid vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $80K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely tough and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Used to live on the Maple Ridge side, now on the Sunset side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in West. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in retail. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

If you value school system, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely better than expected and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Springfield) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's improved dramatically in recent years. The only thing I'd watch out for is dating scene. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..
