Hey everyone, Military spouse here. It's a a small town city with about 11,262 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Newport East sits at 396.5 per 100K. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Does this match your experience? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is underrated in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in North. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in education. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely decent and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
