Most overrated things about Newport News

Anyone else feel this way? Been living here since 2016. Crime rate is something to consider — Newport News sits at 595.5 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,285 for rent here. It's a a mid-size city city with about 185K people. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Pros:
- Good schools
- Close to nature
- Easy commute

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Poor road conditions
- Not enough green space
Let me know your thoughts. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 2 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- The nightlife scene is tough

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Rising rent and home prices

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Happy to answer more specific questions..
