Moving to Newport News — what should I know?

Crime rate is something to consider — Newport News sits at 595.5 per 100K. The median home value here is around $243,300, which is actually reasonable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Should I be concerned? Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Portland about 12 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are developing, gas is tough.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Maple Ridge. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in tech. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
