Working remotely from Newport News — my experience

I've been working remotely from Newport News for 14 years now. Here's my take:

The pace of life here is perfect for remote work. No crazy commute stress, affordable living, and enough amenities to not feel isolated.

Cost of living: pretty reasonable
Internet: Fiber available in most areas — no complaints
Coworking spaces: Limited but the library works in a pinch

If you're looking for a place to WFH, Newport News is underrated for remote workers.

Public transit needs work but they're investing in it. Should improve in next few years.

Moved here last year. No regrets. The local food is incredible.

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.

Traffic is the worst part honestly. But if you live near work it's fine.

Been here 20 years. The city has changed a lot but overall for the better.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Downtown and University District are perfectly safe.

Check out the Lakewood area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

I've lived in Westside for 6 years and it's a hidden gem honestly.

Respectfully disagree about the safety concerns. In my experience, it's been pretty safe in my area.

As someone who moved here from Seattle, I can confirm most of this. The job opportunities surprised me the most.

Coming from Phoenix, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are about the same.

For families, I'd recommend looking at Oakwood. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.
