Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 12 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is nightlife. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Houston about 15 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Definitely worth checking out..

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 38, moved here 15 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Midtown and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Close to major attractions
2. Affordable housing options
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Limited public transit options
3. The nightlife situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for singles. solid vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $70K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely underrated and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Westside) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
