Day-to-day life in Normal, IL

Hey folks, I'm a college student here and Crime rate is something to consider -Normal sits at 276.3 per 100K. It's a a smaller city city with about 52,908 people. Median household income is $66,350, which feels about average for the area. You can expect to pay around $974 for rent here. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Friendly people
- Growing food scene
- Low taxes
- Easy commute

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Cold winters
- Lack of diversity
- Poor road conditions
- Mosquitoes and humidity
Would love some local perspective. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Bought a house here in 2015 and the quality of life is solid. Property values have gone about the same since then.

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much pricey but now it's better than expected.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely challenging and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I work in government here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is solid. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
