Best kept secrets of North Adams, MA

Just moved here 9 months ago and Crime rate is something to consider -North Adams sits at 562.5 per 100K. Rent is about $777/month for a decent place. With a population of 12,660, North Adams is a small town. Poverty rate is 12.8%, which is around average. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I wrong here? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 7 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The nightlife is better than expected compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from LA about 13 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are established, gas is tough.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Definitely worth checking out..

I've been here 3 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
