Is North Amityville still affordable?

First post here. I relocated for work and The median home value here is around $452,100, which is pretty steep. Crime rate is something to consider -North Amityville sits at 119.0 per 100K. With a population of 20,364, North Amityville is a small town. Homes are going for about $452,100 on average. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Does this match your experience? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up. The weather takes some getting used to.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Nashville it's better than expected.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 50, moved here 3 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in Uptown and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The public transit situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 5 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from San Francisco about 3 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are pricey, gas is excellent.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is cultural scene. it exceeded my expectations. Worth doing your research before committing.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want safety, then yeah this place is great. But if housing market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
