You can expect to pay around $1,581 for rent here. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Should I be concerned?

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I'm a contractor and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. The community is pretty good and there's always something going on.

I've lived in Eastside for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- The community vibe scene is average
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Atlanta about 7 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is excellent.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely underrated and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
