OK so It's a a mid-size city city with about 117K people. Average temperature is around 67--F, so the weather is moderate. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Has anyone dealt with this? Appreciate any input. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 10 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 3 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Uptown for 15 years. Moved from Miami for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
construction is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is better than expected - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Uptown schools are average. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Not very walkable outside downtown. And food scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 5/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in West for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Lots of new development happening
- The cost of living scene is average
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cultural scene, then yeah this place is great. But if pet-friendliness matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Came here for work and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The nightlife is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in marketing. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
