Moving to North Charleston -what should I know?

Hey folks, The median home value here is around $267,700, which seems about average. Crime rate is something to consider -North Charleston sits at 966.1 per 100K. Average temperature is around 67--F, so the weather is moderate. With a population of 117K, North Charleston is a mid-size city. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Is this normal for North Charleston? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want food scene, then yeah this place is great. But if cultural scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The food scene is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 29, moved here 15 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Fairview and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The traffic situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for families. average vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
