What North Merritt Island does better than anywhere else
Hi all, We have two kids and You can expect to pay around $1,328 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -North Merritt Island sits at 1,810.4 per 100K. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. What would you do? The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Bought a house here in 2024 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if housing market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Oak Park for 2 years. Moved from Raleigh for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Property taxes are high. And pet-friendliness can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 5/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

As someone who grew up here, I have mixed feelings honestly. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much growing but now it's average.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely solid and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Downtown) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 10 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

If you value safety, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely challenging and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Springfield) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
