I'm retired and The unemployment rate is 2.1%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely improving and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Eastside) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I work in construction here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is better than expected. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Used to live on the Maple Ridge side, now on the South side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 14 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are tough, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
