Longtime lurker here, Homes are going for about $456,700 on average. Should I be concerned?

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 3 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 4 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are affordable, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I genuinely enjoy living here. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 52, moved here 13 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Westside and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The cost of living situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for remote workers. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
