Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely decent and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Limited entertainment options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Seattle about 4 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are manageable, gas is excellent.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

I've been living here for 13 years and I'd say it was the best decision I ever made. The school system is average compared to other places I've lived. Overall Feel free to reach out with questions..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are challenging, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Public transit is solid here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 53, moved here 2 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Pine Hills and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The safety situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for remote workers. improving vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely pretty good and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Dallas about 9 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is average.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if food scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor recreation is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
