Is Northampton worth moving to in 2026?

Median household income is $78,467, which feels about average for the area. Am I overthinking this?

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Boston about 9 years ago. The main reasons were work and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are pricey, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a physical therapist, 31, moved here 12 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The healthcare situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for singles. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The pet-friendliness is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall Hope this helps!.

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.
