Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a HR manager who relocated here from San Diego about 4 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are developing, gas is decent.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 12 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Background: I'm a data analyst, 32, moved here 9 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in East and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Road conditions need improvement
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The walkability situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for couples. challenging vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in marketing. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
