Biggest downsides of living in Oak Forest?

Hey, Born and raised here. Homes are going for about $247,800 on average. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. Household incomes average around $87,941 in Oak Forest. It's a a smaller city city with about 26,888 people. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. Would love some local perspective. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much competitive but now it's average.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Maple Ridge. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Hope this helps!.

I work in hospitality here and it's exactly what I was looking for. The job market for my field is tough. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been living here for 11 years and I'd say it's not perfect but it works for me. The food scene is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'm a physical therapist and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community is pretty good and there's always something going on.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 38, moved here 3 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Sunset and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The traffic situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for singles. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
