Remote worker thinking about Oak Forest

Longtime lurker here, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and It's a a smaller city city with about 26,888 people. The median home value here is around $247,800, which is actually reasonable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Am I overthinking this? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is dating scene. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in South area are excellent. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Denver about 15 years ago. The main reasons were school and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is better than expected.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 34, moved here 5 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in West and Sunset, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Winters are long and cold
3. The food scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- Sunset: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
